DIY Broom Pro dedicated digital NV rifle sight Library

Post by Radagast » 14 Feb 2016, 11:28

Q: What is a Broom Pro.
A: The Broom Pro is a home built dedicated digital night vision scope. The name may be a play on words based on the Drone Pro commercial dedicated digital night vision scope.

Q: Who invented it?
A: UKNVF member Torchwood.

Q: Why would I want to make one?
A: It is the simplest full home build digital scope design, requiring minimal DIY capability. It is probably a stronger design than the Photon Extreme and thus can be safely used with larger, heavier lenses.

Q: Is the image better than the Photon Extreme?
A: No. The Photon has a more sensitive camera (larger pixels). The near eye display is the same for both, so using the same IR & front lens, the Photon Extreme will perform better. The Broom camera has more (smaller) pixels, so if more IR is provided to compensate, then potentially the Broom will give greater detail.

Q: Where do I get the parts?
A: UKNVF member Some Bloke can provide the camera housing body. UKNVF member Splatty can provide the Near Eye Display and the retaining plate for same. UKNVF trader Sure24 can provide the camera. All other parts can be sourced from Ebay.

Q: So I have a question about....
A: Read the threads below.

Q: My question wasn't answered..
A: Start a new thread in the DIY NV forum.

The Oriscape VF-2C is the NED the Broom Pro is designed around. It is the best combination of high resolution and low price at this point in time.
The simplest solution for a first time builder is to buy the VF-2C display from Splatty that has had the components potted (embedded in resin) to prevent water entry and recoil damage.
In depth info on modding and installation of the VF-2C is in the following threads.

Lens threads:
--------------------
The simplest solution for a Broom build is to use one of the lenses recommended by Torchwood in his threads. These are Zenit 100mm F1.5 IR M42 mount. Cosmicar 75mm F1.4 C Mount. Samyang F1.4 85mm Canon mount.

Briefly, the best lenses for a Scopeless build are Prime (non telescopic) M42 film lenses or C mount TV lenses.
Varifocal & zoom lenses can be used if there is a lock screw to prevent adjustment. Movement of the lens will change point of impact. CCTV CS & S mount lens are usually cheaply made, with low quality lenses.
