DIY dedicated digital NV sight with LCD screen (Scopeless) library

Postby Radagast » 05 Mar 2016, 17:51

Scopeless simply means a screened digital NV rifle sight that doesn't require a Day scope.

At the time that UKNV Forum member Some Bloke came up with the first design, all DIY NVs were Add Ons, using a screen on top of a day scope and a camera mounted behind the rear lens. The Scopeless concept kept the screen and camera, but did away with the day scope, substituting a quality camera lens in its place. Hence Scopeless. A better description would be a dedicated digital night vision scope that uses an LCD screen instead of a near eye display.

The following link are intended as a resource and inspiration for those members interested in building their own Scopeless NV sight. Some Bloke continued to develop the idea and sells a number of parts suitable for the DIY builder. He also makes completed Scopeless rifle sights to order. Scroll down past the various home builds to the many threads started by Some Bloke as he designed and manufactured various parts to improve upon the Scopeless idea.

UKNV forum member Rolaids has also developed his own version of Scopeless, the DNVS 3.1. He sells the necessary camera tube / lens mount to USA based members. His builds are linked below, there are links to youtube videos to help understand the concept. Recommended viewing even if another design is chosen.

Pros and cons of Scopeless vs Add On:

One of Some Blokes regular arguments for Scopeless builds is that there is less need for IR illumination compared to Add On rigs. He holds to the view that less IR means less chance of spooking game:

Lens threads:
--------------------
Briefly, the best lenses for a Scopeless build are Prime (non telescopic) M42 film lenses or C mount TV lenses. Varifocal lenses can be used if there is a lock screw to prevent adjustment. Movement of the lens will change point of impact. CCTV CS & S mount lens are usually cheaply made, with low quality lenses. For the builder who doesn't want to read to far, the Cosmicar F1.4 50mm and 75mm C mount TV lenses are excellent. The Super Takumar 50mm, 55mm and 105mm M42 lenses are good. The Zenit 100mm F1.5 M42 lens is excellent, as is the Samyang 85mm F1.4 Canon lens.
