A compilation of camera discussions over the years. Browsing through here may save the first time DIY builder some money, time and heart ache.
For those who are not interested in in-depth reading, 4 years of camera tests can be summarized as follows:
The Watec 902H was the original standard.
The KT&C E700 board camera is better performing and replaced the Watec in Add-on & Spotter builds.
The KT&C EJ230 bullet camera is the same as the E700 in a different format and replaced the Watec in Scopeless and dedicated night vision sight builds.
The Watec 910HX outperforms the KT&C cameras, but at 8 times the price, so it is not commonly used.
The Watec & KT&C cameras are sold by UKNV Trader member Sure24.
UKNV forum Trader member Splatty sells a smaller bullet cam than the EJ230, for use with his dedicated night vision scope designs.

The Chip set used by the EJ230 & E700 is the 1/3" 960H SONY Exview HAD CCD ll. Other cameras use the same chip set, including several of the AliExpress cameras linked below, but KT&Cs firmware gives their cameras a better result in field tests.

Many cameras use the Sony Super HAD CCD II chip set. These will normally work with IR, but are poor low light performers without illumination.

There are a number of different Watec & KT&C cameras that do not perform well with infra red or in low light conditions. Discussion of those will be found in the threads below.

The above cameras are all of the older CCD type. CMOS is the new standard. To date CMOS cameras that have been tested by forum members did not reach the performance levels of the E700 / EJ230. The CMOS camera in the Yukon Photon XT is an exceptional performer, but to date no one on UKNVF has identified the model or a source for DIY builders.

There are a number of different bullet and board cameras that have been tested and give adequate performance, if not to the level of the KP&C models listed above. Discussion of those will be found in the threads below.

Most camera's come with an IR blocking filter. This will need to be removed for NV work. See threads below. KT&C E700 can be ordered from Sure24 with the filter removed.

Reading the NV101 thread will explain much of the terminology use in the linked threads:

KT&C EX500 for those who want a cheaper camera than the E700. No On Screen Display adjustment for settings. More IR is needed compared to the EJ230, so no real saving in the complete cost of a build. Used in Mini Markyvision / NT120 builds:

AliExpress / Miracle Cottage cameras.
----------------------------
AliExpress is roughly equivalent to a Chinese version of Ebay. Most of the cameras purchased by UKNVF forum members came from two AliExpress dealers, Miracle Cottage & Macro Snowball, who may be the same people trading under two names. The successful cameras tended to use a version of the 1/3" 960H SONY Exview HAD CCD ll chip set used by the E700 & EJ230.
Interest in these cameras was high due to Rolaids testing one in his watec vs KP&C comparison.

None of the AliExpress cameras beat the KP&C product.

The experience of UKNVF members when ordering from AliExpress wasn't good. Deliveries took up to two months. Some worked well with IR. Some did not. Some were dead on arrival. Or missing parts. Or not as specified. IR filters may not be removed as promised. Warranty may not be honoured. Which is why we don't recommend buying cameras from China. Or lenses. Or Screens. Or batteries. Caveat Emptor.

Don't know if it's a bit off-topic...
How does a finished NV product compare to these?
For example, ATN x-sight/supervision compare to e700/902h?
I cannot dind any direct compare...

The camera in the X Sight is a full HD (2.1 Megapixel) camera, so it has much higher resolution than the E700/902H which only have around 0.4 -0.6 Megapixels.
That makes the X sight the best digital day scope available for the money and allows it to have a large range of digital zoom without degrading the image seen in the near eye display.
However, having 2.1 million pixels on the same size of sensor as the E700 (1/3) and even worse compared to the 902H (1/2) means that each pixel in the X Sight is much smaller than on the E700 or the 902H.
These small pixels intercept much less light than the larger pixels in the E700 and 902H.
That's not a problem during the day when there's plenty light available, but for NV work where the only source of light is the IR coming from the illuminator, the small pixels simply can't produce a large enough electrical signal to create a decent image.
It doesn't matter how much fancy computing power from the Obsidian core you throw at it, those small pixels are the fundamental failing of the X Sight as a night vision device.
The best commercial digital NV scopes like the Drone pro use sensors with similar resolutions to the E700 and 902H, and because those sensors have much larger pixels they CAN produce large enough electrical signals when the only source of illumination is IR.
Bottom line - any NV product, whether commercial or home brew which uses an E700 or 902H will have better NV performance than an X Sight.

Cheers

The CMOS camera in the Photon has larger pixels and will pick up more light. The number of pixels is close to the number of pixels in the 640x480 screen used, so there is no loss in the display. The E700/EJ230 has more, smaller pixels. With a 800x480 display it will have better definition, but the cost is reduced low light performance. It's still better than anything else available for DIY, apart from the Watec 910HX.

I've not looked into the latest Pulsar N870, but I would expect the same or better performance to the Photon, which is made by the same company.
The Drone Pro is noted for needing IR, but giving a very good picture. AFAIK the make of camera installed isn't publicly known.
The ATN X Sight has been a failure, it is now advertised as a day scope with some night time ability, it was supposed to be a night scope with day time ability. It has a large number of pixels, which allows for a high definition daylight picture. The trade off is the pixels are too small for decent light gathering in low light conditions.
Compared to the Night Site NS200 and its ilk, the E700 is much better than the installed camera, one of the earlier DIY uses for the E700 was replacing the NS50 & NS 200 camera.

Just to add, the Supervision was a failure when it came out, many years ago. There is a long discussion thread on AR15.com about it. Tech has moved on since then. If you must buy a commercial spotter scope then the Pulsar X870 is top of the line, but at a top of the line price.

Thank you very much for your answer!
Just one more question please: why all commercial digital NV are high magnification? the lowest is still 2X, why can't they make a 1X with wider field of view?

Because at x1 magnification the targets most of us shoot at (rabbits and foxes), and the ranges we typically shoot them at, means they cannot be seen clearly enough to target accurately - in many cases the reticle would completely cover the target
Normal practice is to use a low magnification NV device to spot targets and a higher magnification NV device to to take the shot.
Current best practice is to use a thermal imager for spotting and an NV scope for shooting

Cheers

Thank you very much, but I already know that those scopes are for shooting a far object, I just cannot figure out why all I2T devices have a standard 1X version, while I can't find a single 1X digital night vision?

Larger lens = more light gathered. This is a stickied archive thread, not a general discussion thread. Please start a new thread for any other questions. If the answers are good enough, then your new thread will be added to the archive.
