I've used 40 grainers and 55 grainers on night time fox hunting out of my Tikka Lite .223. To be honest there is very little (if any) difference in the recoil. I loose a little sight picture every time. I don't feel that it makes much difference on the larger quarry as you generally hear the tell-tale thump of impact. If your setup is performing well then IMHO I wouldn't bother switching rifles. Save the cash for something that will help you more.

I use a .17Rem/25grn Bergers or a .20Prac/39grn Sierra Blitz Kings (necked down .223 case) and I don't lose the sight picture on either of those with the Drone Pro or the Photon Xtreme respectively.

I do lose the picture momentarily when the DP goes onto my Blaser R93 .243 OffRoad Pro using 70grn BalTips for Scotland..... that might be muzzle flash with the Ase Utra JetZ, the other 2 are using onelesscharlie calibre specific mods and there's definitely no perceived muzzle flash from those....(at least I think I might lose it on the .243....been 9 months since I last tried. )

A correct grip on the butt & cheekweld is imperative for accurate shooting.

Interesting to hear a number of reports about the .20 calibres and no loss of sight picture. I'm tempted!

I've got a .17hmr slot that I'm not going to use, so maybe a variation will be in order at some point  I won't be moving my .223 on though.

If you've got 'clean' ground and by that I mean arable and grassland where the vegetation is short for most of the year then a .17rem would be worth considering.

I used my Tikka 595 for the DronePro for 18months before the Xtreme brought the Sako .20prac back into play....those 25grn Berger's drop foxes like sacks of spuds! In fact, it was a joy to shoot but hasn't been out much since the Xtreme came along.

The .20prac is easy to reload for.....just a set of Redding S type bushing dies with a 17/20 recapping spindle with a 20 expander button. No shoulder bumper as per a .20Tac required. I got David at the ShootingShed to turn down a Lee .223 length trimmer to .20 too. Spot on.

Like above,if you want laser flat shooting with pffft recoil the get a 17 remington!
Shoot 20gr at well over 4000fps or 25gr at close to 4000fps.
Personally don't find the 223 to recoil enough to loose sigh picture (tikka t3 light).Loose sight picture from moisture/gasses but not recoil.

I don't reload, so the .17 rem is not for me. I bet it's a sweet little round to shoot though

Maybe it isn't recoil making me lose the sight picture, could well be muzzle flash as suggested, but in any case it's not ideal.

I've had an idea - I'll see if any of my friends' moderators will fit my gun and try those if I can. might just make the difference I'm looking for.

Do you not have a moderator on the rifle?
If no then that's why it is a little more "jumpy".

The 223 and photon rig is still doing the trick, I shot a dog fox earlier this evening at 140 yards. Maybe I'll just live with the loss of sight picture. As suggested, I probably won't gain a lot by getting another calibre.

Will save the pennies to go towards a thermal spotter or another nice shotgun I think
