Weatherby Vanguard in .223??

Post by steve54 » 28 Jul 2017, 00:08

Hello Folks.
I am looking for an entry level .223 and have seen some very good reviews of the Weatherby Vanguard rifles.
They claim to be sub moa accurate out of the box, - depending on ammo used. The only possible issue I can see for me, - is that they do not come with screw cut barrels for a mod. Other than that, the reviews appear very favourable.
I would like to hear from anyone here that owns , or has used these rifles, and can give me some good first hand info.
Thanks in advance.
Steve.

They have been around for 30 years. Made by Howa in Japan, sold as the Howa 1500 in Australia, Howa Lightning in the USA, previously sold as the CMC Mountaineer and as the Smith & Wesson 1500. The Vanguard has slight modifications, made by Howa and rebranded.
The actions are good, barrels are good, trigger mediocre but can be gunsmithed, one guy in OZ does them by mail order, pull the trigger group and mail it to him, no need for the full gun.
Check the stock provided, at least in OZ they come in a variety of options. Cheap injection molded through to top notch. Stock flex may cause some POI shift.
Very reliable, my old rifle club had several as rental rifles. High round counts with no issues.

TL,DR: Good value for money.

Cheers for that. Yes, I have seen the ones on their website. Looks like a good excuse for me to nip over to have a browse around the shop
