Howa 1500 in .223?

Hi folks,
I have just put in a variation for a .223 as I have decided to start taking on fox work again. When I was doing it before I always used either the .22-250 or .243
Couple of other pest controllers I know keep going on about .223 so I've decided to give one a go. I'm leaning towards the howa but open to suggestions, I'm not interested in remmys or rugers this time as I want something different.
So what's the thoughts please?

Hi
I have a Howa in .223 with a varmint fluted barrel and i cannot fault it . Good on foxes using 53 grain ballistic tips .
Ive put it in a Boyed thumb hole stock not saying there is any thing wrong with the original i just seem to shoot better
with the thumb hole stocks .

My friend as howa 25 06 and a 22 250 and a 223 he said the 223 was a verey good but did not have knock down power of the 22 250 so if you if you shot a 22 250 befor you my be diserpointed I have just got a new howa 22 250 they are a verey good priced rifle all the keepers around hear use them so they are a good work horse I have always shot 22 250 for fox and vermin

Thank you gentlemen, appreciated.
I was very tempted to go back to 22-250 but fancied a change. Can always go back to it if I find the .223 lacking.

I have a howa .223 varmint fluted barrel in a grs stock, no modifications except for a trigger tweak. 53gn vmax are awesome out to 250M, literally blows a fox head to bits. I also use 69gn Sierra tmk for longer ranges and to my surprise on a calm day I can put almost every round on a 30cm gong at 600m. The only negative thing is the weight when I have to yomp 3-5 miles a night on hilly south wales.

I use a Howa .204 with 32grain and have taken Fox to 200 yds + . Its the lightweight Mini action 1500 for walking its great. I also have the New Howa 1500 stainless Sporter In .223 using 40 grain and 53grain I use from the truck. I found that the .22-250, I had trouble with a fast load it started to go off zero and burnt the bore out after 600 rounds ??

Some really informative replies thank you.
I did buy the howa 1500 in the keeper package.
Interestingly I was really pleased with the accuracy initially, using hornandy 40grn I was getting clover leaf groups at 100 yds easily. Then I decided to try some 50,s
They didn't group so well, went back to the 40,s and the groups were crap. I understand about leading etc. So I bronze brushed with the solvent, then cloth. Today tried again and the zero was two inches lower and slightly right? Checked scope mounts, stock fixings, moddy etc. It just won't do tight groups now, a magpie did get unlucky however by perching thirty yards from my target.

223 poi movement two things have you checked you said you have checked scope mounts sounds like you have done everything like I thought I had but you will have to take the scope off and check the Allen bolts that hold the two bits of Picatinny rail on To the action they work loos. Stock bolts and recoil lugs the lugs my need a packer underneath because I have had the stock off a few times now and you think you have put it back the same but the stock and action pull together more it's not much maybe only 1/4 of a turn off the stock bolts but it can make up to 4 inches at 100 yes this may help good luck

That sounds like a lose component issue you have. When I first got my howa whilst breaking the barrel in I did suffer a loose picatini rail issue that some of the softer grade loctite solved and never has had another issue.

Thank you again guys, I've put over eighty rounds of hornandy v Max and Norma through it in the last five days with varying degrees of accuracy. I keep cleaning the barrel, I let it cool down between groups of three, and just when you start thinking its there they go two inches out again.
Today a mate suggested I made things easier on myself, he put in details into the hornandy ballistics calculator and said do a 48 yrd zero. 23 rounds of v Max later grrrrr.
I even started to doubt myself and wondered if I had developed a flinch.
So, tomorrow I will strip everything down, tighten everything after using some loctite, and start all over again.
