Ward d 700 on steyr pro hunter

Post by whitehackle » 31 Mar 2018, 12:40

I use a ward d 700 on my howa, and love it. I also have a steyr pro hunter, and would like to be able to put the ward on this too. At the moment i have a s&b 8x56. I know i eill have to change scope to get the best out of the ward.

But on the steyr the bolt handle only leaves a 2mm gap from the scope as it is, so I dont know if it will be possible to lift the scope high enough to get enough clearance for the add on.

Does anyone use the ward on a pro hunter?

Thanks

Hi Bud
I’ve got a Pro Hunter in 223. I also have a 800L. It was in the original 700 case and Clive altered it for me. I’ve just managed to get it to work but you need very high mounts. I doubt it will work even with them and the original case though. I’ve given up now as all my other rifles either have a Drone or are fine with the add on. It’s the bolt handle arrangement that causes all the bother as you say. So I just leave a photon on it which I find fine at 223 ranges. I’m also lucky that I’ve got a very rare third eye pic rail as it’s the short action they don’t make em now I don’t think so I can mount the drone if I have to.

Thanks

My howa is my main foxing rifle, and I dont want to ruin my pro hunter for daytime use. It would have been nice to use the ward on both rifles. But its not the end of the world.

I use the Ward 700 on both of my Steyr Prohunters (243 & 260), just cant the Ward until it clears the bolt shroud, still works fine.

Ok thanks

What scope and mounts? I didnt think it would be easy. As it hits the eye peice housing at the moment!

Thanks

Both Prohunters have a MAK steel pic rail on them with Warne medium 30mm rings. Sightron S-Tac 2.5-17.5x56 on the 243 and Niko Stirling 4-16x50 on the 260.

I can email separate pics if you want but its off the rifle at the mo (should have told you the Warne rings on the S-Tac are the QD version) whilst the thermal is on for lambing time (don`t wanna risk spooking the foxes with IR). If you are saying you want pics of the Ward attached/canted it will have to be with it on the Niko/260 (PA rings). Give me your email and I try it tomorrow.

I just wanted to see a pic of the scope hight really. I have my scope mounted as low as possible (before I had ever thought I would have a NV add on) and dont want to mess up my shooting position.

The pro hunter is a daytime rifle, but it would be a bonus to be able to use the ward d on it

I would suggest then that you get a MAK steel pic rail for it, uses all six holes in the receiver for even more security and gives you the versatility for any future optics (Dronepro, Trail, N355) that require a pic rail, Warne 30mm medium rings (QD and PA are same height). I guarantee that the S-Tac will be as low as poss and the bolt will clear the Ward if you cant it.
