First report, 5 minutes out tonight at 17.45. Still not black out, but at least dark. A good strong wind at least, so clear.
Using the new WDV800S behind a Sidewinder 4-16x50, and XSearcher aspherical torch with Ruby.
I have my favourite gate at 280m. For years have used it for all my NV reference.
The Ruby takes my combo out to the gate at the scope set at x16 power.
Never been able to manage that before, nowhere near. Even when I had the early DPx10 with a BlackSun in the same torch it got to 280 but I wouldn't have taken a shot. Not sure I still would with the new setup, but its more tempting. At that extreme range the atmospherics were the limiting factor.
I felt the Ruby maximised the WDV potential for long distance when combined with the Sidewinder. The limitations of the sensor and screen were found which is accomplished enough for mer mortals. I can't see how any more ir would help. A 70m rabbit I've never had so crisp from a WDV, very close to my old DP.
Here I'm talking shootable range; there is oodles more backstop and peering into the gloom viewing range. More testing to find the latter parameters.
The Sidewinders cross hair in the 800S viewer did seem quite fine, it was OK for me. With some playing I might get it a little crisper but the WDV internal lens seems pushed to get it perfect (my 700 was the same); so a tiny amount of fuz off daylight sharp crisp. Not sure how better the 800L might be; I know Clive loves it. A DP doesn't have the same issue, and does have a superior screen, but then it should for the price.
Sorry have no DP to test, but with its lens, and amolied display screen, then that could be outrageous???? DPx15 now that would be something!
I haven't tested the "jewel" effect looking the other way. All the rabbits and two deer didn't notice anything and happily carried on their business..still are.
So yes Clive's comes up trumps again.
I really don't care for lasers and now don't need to think about them either. I can see beyond what I would shoot to and have the backstop. The only limitation is that digital is a active system so requires the ir to get out there and back. The Ruby certainly can.
