Lens Options: Forum member needs advice

Post by Similan9 » 25 Feb 2014, 09:59

Hi all

Hopefully someone can offer some advice.
I've had a member on the phone earlier who isn't particularly computer savvy so I said I would post this and get back to him with any feedback that comes as a result.

He is looking into a project that would include a vary-focal lens/larger lens in general. We have a 50mm Board lens on the shelf but I don't know whether this would be suitable or not...

Any feedback on how you think this or a suitable vary-focal lens could work for your applications would be much appreciated. Pros and cons etc.

Mat, if it's for a spotter project, and if we exclude the big brand name lenses, then a commonly used varifocal would be something like a 5-50 or 5-100, depending on the users needs.

Do you see a use for a standard 50mm lens George?

Personally, no, Mat. I have one here that I purchase a couple of years ago. Tried it a couple of times and put it back in it's box.

Couldn't get away with not being able to open up the field of view to first locate the quarry.

It might be ok to use in a short range scopeless system as it wold give a reasonable magnification on a 1/3" sensor camera. My own preference would be for a c mount or slr lens but this might make a lightweight compact unit.
