I regularly use an XD75 and 200yrds shots are no problem. I can believe someone shot one at stupid range because you can see them at stupid range. I have not shot a fox over 300yrd with the xd75 but regularly shoot to 250 and over. As with anything I’d rather have it 100 or 150 but sometimes needs must. I’m pretty much over the moon with it and struggle to justify swapping it to upgrade yet but with all the talk of the ward I’ve considered it over and over but I just can’t see it getting any more foxes. Yes there are times you need to wait to identify and sometimes you don’t take the shot but it’s a tool. Lambing time it’s expecially useful as you’re totally covert. Going back to last lambing three foxes into the same field from 237-256 yards all ranged with Leica range finding binos. It’s easily capable of that and I’m confident at that and I wouldn’t say I was any sort of rifleman but to say it’s a 150 scope is totally wrong.

This makes me wonder are there perhaps bad ones ( thermal units) and good ones ? A bit like NV tubes? As I’ve heard people say they prefer their old HD38s’s to their new XDs and XQs???

I can't tell you how different XD75's compare as I've never looked through another. I do have a guide 518 and I prefer the pulsar pic because it pick's out the background better. However I've heard of people who've had replacements and say the new unit's are better so there could quite well be slight differences maybe.

I'm using a Reme .204 with 26inch barrel which doesn't move whatsoever when you pull the trigger so you get to see the shot strike the target. I used the rifle with a 6x gen 3 dedicated for a while and a gen3 add on before that and have every confidence in the rifle. Thermal definitely isn't as accurate as a dayscope just because the ret cover's a biggish area of the target at range. I still use a 22-250 on the lamp and also have a .223 which the thermal was on but run out of rounds so swapped it to the .204 and left it on since. The .204 is a nightmare to turn in the truck which is why I had the thermal on the .223 but most of the time I either shoot off the roof or out the window so the length of the barrel isn't an issue.

The reticle I use is the circle with the tiny cross in the middle but never use that as I always shoot with the pip so it's just a tiny x but then reverse the polarity of the cross so it's black. I always shoot on white hot just for quicker target acquisition and found it a struggle putting the white cross where I wanted on a white target. You can loose the black cross but the moment you've got the fox centred it obviously stands out as black on the white of the fox in the pip and seems to enable you to put it where you want. My eyes are shite so the dots and gaps and what not didn't suit so stuck with the little black cross however when I first got the scope I was using the full view and magging up on the large black + .

Just looked back at an old video and the large black + covers too much of the target at range which is why I changed. I also found it a faff zooming in and out and found the pip giving you that bigger fov for initial spotting and then just looking up for the shot suited me best.

Thanks for that great info, yeah I use pip with one of the fine traditional looking Black reticles with white hot.
Think I may have to look at getting a more specialised foxing rig though.
Thanks again for your help.
