Pulsar Trail Upgrade?

Post by elmer fudd » 25 Dec 2017, 11:20

Does anyone know if or when the Trail riflescopes will be upgraded with the ULIS 17u a-Si sensors, as used in the latest Helion XQ38F spotters?

AFAIK all the sensors in the in the Helion XQ/XP spotters and Trail XQ/XP riflescopes are Ulis 17 micron alpha silicon.
The HD and XD series spotters and the XD series riflescopes used the old Ulis 25micron alpha silicon sensors.
Pulsar started using Ulis 17 micron alpha silicon sensors with the Apex XQ series of spotters and Apex XQ series of riflescopes

Thanks for that, I appreciate your advice.

The real question is when we will see the new ULIS 12um 320pixel cores... smaller lenses, lower prices?! No 640pixel core version yet announced by ULIS through.

The 12 micron sensor is clearly the next step in the progression of Pulsar thermals. However, if history is anything to go by, we might have to wait a while.
Pulsar like to milk the maximum amount out of any technology before being forced by market pressures to move to the next step.
I think that the pressure will come from the US market where 12 micron cores are becoming more common. Only when the price of 12 micron cored thermals comes down to a point where Pulsar think they are losing a significant amount of sales to it them will they make the move to 12 micron.

As Bruce says. Pulsar has only just invested in upgrade and remodelling their range. Think it will take another good year for them to consider more changes and investment. They are a progressive company but do need to squeeze out some profits first.
The drive is on but takes a 2 to 3 years pressure to have the next best thing filter down. When the 12 micron becomes the standard there will be something better on the horizon.
You have to jump sometime. The units are already getting pretty useful and price reachable for some.

The 17um Pulsar units were announced about 8months after Ulis announced the sensors. The new 12um sensors are pin compatible with the existing 17um ones, so could just be dropped in. Been more than that since the 13um were released, maybe depends on the competition (or lack of) from FLIR. Also 320pixels are easier to scale to the 640pixel display. Of course you guys have greater experience with Pulsar somtime will tell. Prefer not to wait another year.
