I don't think we are disagreeing here - I shoot using a thermal riflescope with a 640 core and 75mm lens and regularly shoot foxes at 200 yards or more, and the target is clear enough to ensure recognition and a safe shot.
My issue with all digital front add-ons, both NV and thermal is that the display fitted to these devices is too low resolution.
Even if the sensor is 384x288, using a display with a higher resolution, say 1280x800 would allow the day scope magnification to be increased further without causing visible pixellation when viewed through the riflescope.
I use a thermal roof mounted spotter with a 640 core and 75mm lens. The image is viewed on a 7 inch 1280x800 LCD screen, but can also be seen simultaneously on a 640x480 VF-2C near eye display.
The image on the LCD screen is much better than the image on the near eye display
