Once our little chinese friends realise there's possibly a huge market for thermal they'll find a way round the lens problem, just you wait and see

There will be a huge market for thermal, but the bulk of that market will for short range thermal imaging and that will use small diameter lenses.
Cheaper lenses in those small diameters will come along quite soon, but the larger lenses that we typically need for hunting (38mm and larger) will remain expensive for a while yet I'm afraid because those size lenses and larger are typically used by the military and police and as we all know they always pay top dollar for their kit.

Cheers

Bruce AMAZING BUILD      . Can i ask where you got the lens from please? did you look at any other sensors before choosing this particular one? Only asking as there a few makes/types of sensors on alibaba.would love to give this ago but iv only got a budget of around £1500 so will to cut a few corners. And upgrade when funds allow.

Peter,
The lens came from the same company as the sensor (Sun Creative Technologies)
There are no standard lens to sensor fittings like in the camera world (M42, C, CS etc), every manufacturer wants to sell sensors and lenses together and you're pretty much stuck with that.
You're correct there are several companies on Ali Baba selling thermal sensors, but Sun Creative was the only one selling a 640x480 pixel sensor who were willing to sell me one off sensor and lens.
I'm sorry, but £1500 won't get you near what I built.
The 640x480 sensor cost approx £1875 and the 50 mm lens cost approx £500.
Then add shipping, duty and VAT when it gets here, and you're looking at £3K and you still need some form of display.
They do a lower resolution sensor 384x288 pixels for approx £1250 - that's the same resolution sensor as is in most of the thermals available at the moment (HD38/50, Guide 518 etc)

Cheers
