Which S-tac?

Post by Big ears » 11 Mar 2018, 09:49

Hi really sorry if this has been done to death but I am looking for a scope to fit a Ward NV onto. It will go on my fox rifle which is a 204R. It has an MTC Viper at the moment.
I am thinking of upgrading this scope so it’s better during the day and looking at S-tac. Obviously the 56mm lens version is tops but twice the price of the 50mm one.
Is there much to choose between them? Would the 50mm be enough for daytime 300yds, nighttime 150yds max?
Thanks for any help.

Hi Big ears.
Mate and i spent a full night testing scope's with the Wardy 700, S-tac 2.2-17.5x56, mtc mamba-lite, mtc viper, hawke sidewinder, ags 3-12x44, with the wardy 700 there was no noticeable difference in performance, however the s-tac did work better than the other scopes with the pvs 14 gen3, with a modern i/r such as the blacksun ruby they are capable of 300 yd fox shooting on 10 mag--------so imo the s-tac wont give you any more n/v performance, but it probably will in the day light, suppose it depends how much your willing to spend to get that little bit more day light performance, i would think that the viper that you have already will allow you 300 yd day light fox shots -------sensible answer is save your money.

Ive also looked through a s-tac 4-20x50 on a wardy, n/v wise its no better than a mtc viper, but might/should be during the day.

Quite a few people that buy the s-tac 2.2-17.5 x 56 end up moving it on at a later date, not because its s**te, but because of the money tied up in it for the little extra performance it gives--------only you can decide that.

Quality dose not come cheap if you can afford a S Tac 2.5-17.5 x56 I would not hesitate in buying one. you cant evaluate a scope like the S Tac in a couple of hours and will have to spend a lot more money to get better glass .

Thanks guys this is tricky. Perhaps get a ward first, try on existing scope and see get new scope if not happy may be best option. Looks like the s-tac 56mm has the edge in the day.

The Hawke range of scopes work great, especially the sidewinder models with the Ward add ons.

Bushnell 6500 works well.
You need a Blacksun Ruby pill to get the best out of a Wardy though, as they need a lot of IR

I started out in add-on NV with a Bushnell 6500 2.5-16x42 and you're right it is good scope for NV.
However the S Tacs are better, even the 3-16x42 is better than the 6500 (and a lot cheaper) and the 2.5-17.5 x 56 is a whole lot better both during the day and at night.

Cheers

The Blacksun Ruby gets the best out of every scope I have used with my WD 800s .

IR not an issue as have a black sun. Does anyone know if Clive goes to any shows as it would be good to handle one before buying.
