Bored lamping discussion
Hi , need some help in clearing up 2 stupid friendly augments iv had with next door keeper and lamping buddy after a couple of boring night lamping . 1st is easy has anyone been caught on an average speed camera or are they a very effective deterent but not turned on . 2nd is harder , the boss wants to fly up to Scotland to shoot stags but wants me to drive up and take his blazer rifle in truck to avoid airport hassle, if he takes the bolt and trigger unit in hand luggage how legal is it for me to take his rifle , in theory it's now just a piece of metal that cannot be used . Sorry but you want to hear some of the other rubbish we come up with when bored
thanks Jim

Hi Jim,
1st, dunno as I never ever speed
2nd, I think you could get in the poo, a moderator has only got a hole up it but still classed as a firearm
3rd, get some n/v then you might not get so bored

There are people caught by average speed cameras, but most are not active.
The problem is, you don't know which ones are active, so they are a pretty good deterrent.
I heard that on the average speed camera section of the A9 from Dunblane to Inverness there were only 2 or 3 pairs of cameras active at any one time.
Definitely NOT legal for you to take his rifle. A chambered barrel is a pressure bearing component (and is serial numbered) and is therefore part of a firearm so, unless that specific rifle is on your certificate it would be illegal for you to have it in your possession.
Your boss either drives or deals with the airport hassle (I doubt if he could even get on a train with it)
Cheers
Bruce

Couple of thoughts, since I don't know UK laws:
- maybe your boss can send the rifle using courier or something, to RFD I think? (here in Finland it would be legal to send it to yourself for pick-up)
- is there some requirements for transport or temporary storage? If there was large lockbox in the car you were driving would your boss be able to put it there and not give you the key? (here in Finland if you have rifle permit you can loan a rifle and then give it back to the owner after transport)

I think the only way that the OPs boss can get his rifle to Scotland without it being in his possession is to take it to an RFD and have the RFD send it to another RFD near where he is going to shoot.
Couriers authorised to transport firearms, will only collect and deliver to RFDs
If the OP puts the rifle is a locked "strongbox" for which only his boss has the key, and the OP then drives the vehicle to Scotland to give the rifle to his boss, then he is essentially acting as a courier, which he is not authorised to do.
The solution is simple. The OPs boss gets his shit together and takes it with him on the flight.
People do this all the time, and airports and airlines in the UK are well acquainted with procedures that have to be followed so that it's done safely and legally.

Hi,
We have average speed cameras on the A19 Northbound just before Tyne Tunnel, they are turned on can see the little red LED on top, but never heard of anyone getting caught speeding.
Speed limit is 50mph then sneakily goes to 40mph don't know how they would work it out between two fixed points as the cameras are far apart, I would say it's more of a deterrent.

Thanks for clarifying that ,we both said we couldn't take a rifle up but wasn't sure about the blazer as both the trigger and bolt were removable so at least we know ,it was only a discussion between mates sat in a draughty landy . And iv never sped between average speed cameras so they are very good at doing their job
thanks Jim. PS use night vision but still spot with lamp
