Re: Thermal..... Again!
It was with a reme vssf .204 and 6x dedicated Nv scope. It was definitely the one I've been after but it wasn't my hands it was more my heart. Especially when it didn't come out of the trees as quick as I thought it should but more so knowing it was all on camera if I missedphilong wrote:Which rifle and NV did you use ? good video that one.....I bet it gave you sweaty palms from the excitment.....you'll have to have another check in case that wasn't the one you were after

I'm finding the screen very beneficial with the thermal, especially on this type of sit out where you haven't got a gauranteed bait point and you constantly need to scan, it's not harsh on your eyes whatsoever and extremely comfortable not holding and scanning with a mono by using a tripod. You do need a decent way of concealing the light though, last night was a gutter with rushes along the top. That's the other thing with the thermal, even though there's rushes either side of my scanning arc there's no IR reflection blinding and whitening the view from bounce back.

Fox Hunter, what screen are you using and how do you power it? I would think a 12v battery would be the thing? I'm still waiting for my hd38s to be delivered to TJ's and would like to get a screen in ready

I'm running it off my 12V Deben lithium lamping battery. Bit over kill for the job but it's the lightest and best I've got.
Rickfitz above is waiting for an iphone scope mount to use with his HD38S. This sounds like a good idea as it's all self contained. It would probably be a better idea to use a DVR or a screen with a self contained power source in all honesty than my set up. However for me there's no problem with the additional wire to the battery as I'm static and my idea of walking scanning looking at a screen went out the window. It suits me far better to scan through the thermal eye piece and slip it in a bino pack for the shot if I'm mobile. and carry the screen and battery separately.
If I done it again I'd probably go for a better screen though. Whilst adequate and cheap it really feels it. I'm also concerned about the wires from the screen being so thin they seem easy to loose a connection as theres no rubber bung holding the wire where it comes out the back of the screen. I've taped mine in a loop so it can't 'pull' out. I haven't got a clue about what's better out there but I'd also look for more pixels or resolution or whatever it is because there is ever so slightly a better pic through the eye piece compared to when the image is projected to the screen. Bruce is the man to speak to on screens. However the pic on the screen is way better than my vid. Also the focus on the Guide was for the 132M final shot not the initial 500yrd spot but a screen is definitely the way to go for static shooting.
Edit to add: It suits me using an additional battery and screen because the screen and battery is positioned out of site as mentioned above because of the glow and the thermal is a short distance away from it. Basically the best way to set up I've found is to have the thermal on a bank or wall with the rifle in position and Im out of site behind the wall or bank looking at the screen. You need to make sure you're not sky lined obviously and then you can slip into position for the shot when it presents itself. Where I shoot there's usually a mountain or large bank behind me somewhere so even on full moon lit nights I've got plenty of cover to conceal my location if you can position yourself the right way.

nice video buddy, good job you didnt miss him on video, you would never have lived it down.
Re: Thermal..... Again!
Foxhunter, I loved your video of the fox and I watched every second I could even feel your finger on the trigger and I squeezed off the shot at the precise time that you fired.
can anyone tell me where is the best and cheapest place to buy a thermal imager?
I have a new pulsar on order from bushwear in perth but I am wondering if I am being to hasty and I should bide my time and safe up for a FLIR H307 or would the pulsar be suffice??
this night vision/thermal game is a minefield when it comes to buying kit and I don't wanna make a wrong move.

If you've already ordered the HD38S then I don't think you are going to get a massive improvement on anything else unless you spend silly amounts. The pulsar will do all you need but Im not sure how much better the 307 would be. For twice the price I'm not sure if it will be twice as good. I don't think Bushwear is the cheapest but they are definitely reliable. There's a back order with the importers so if you went elsewhere that was cheaper it could take longer for delivery because you'd go at the back of the list.
Re: Thermal..... Again!
I got out for a bit last night with the iscope on the back of the NV, I must say I'm a little disappointed, the iPhone struggles with the brightness & whites out a bit unless I turn the aperture to almost closed, I also didn't have much room to mount do the eye piece was a bit distance,
I'll try to upload some footage when I work out how to do it via my phone, the image that I could see without iscope was loads better, same old story, early days I guess I need a good play

Re: Thermal..... Again!
I always struggle with my iphone to get a remotely decent pic, I think it looks good on the phone but then terrible when I upload it. I was hoping to hear that because you were able to hold it so still with the iscope it would make a vast improvement on picture quality. I guess it will take a bit of time to get the absolute most out of it but I'll look forward to seeing the current photo's and if and how you manage to improve them because I need all the help I can get
.
