Or would this be better..

I like the 1650m detection range with the 307 but in reality I'm doubting it'll be any better than the Guide or Pulsar, anybody had first hand experience of them?
Morning Foxy,

Unfortunately they'll be completely naff as they're only 9hz refresh rate compared to an HD38 at 30hz or a Guide at 50hz. Bloody expensive too.

Those that have tried both reckon that you wouldn't want to go below 30 for all practical purposes.

Flir do make better but won't export due to the itar regs.

Have you seen the TI gear on the Armstrong Optical website? They've got vids on YT under armopt too. Mainly Guide stuff but they've also got a couple of alternatives for TI 'scopes. Ian Johnstone is the man to contact.

Cheers

Cheers for the reply Fizz

I knew the 9Hz bit wasn't good. I just thought as I won't be moving it may be ok IF the unit was clearer or had a better detection range. I wasn't sure about the viewing angle of the 65mm lens and if it would suit foxing. They are cheaper than on that web site it was just easy for links. With the Guide close on £5000 I wasn't sure if the 307 with the 1650m detection range was a better bet for similar money.
I've read or heard about Ian Johnstone, I'll check armstrong out now...

Had one of the HS 307's for 2 years now, use for my deer management, and would not be without one, but would concede the new 518EC would be my next choice in that bracket. The wee FLIR is no good as far as I can see, far too short range and not enough germanium cmsquare afront. Can see deer over 1 mile with the HS307, the 9hz is not an issue in my experience, though of course 30 or 60hz would be better. If you don't have to oversee more than 2-300 m then it might suit, but take a look on YT at the comparisons between 24mm, doubled 24mm and 65mm lensed units to get an idea why bigger is better (all on the one vid, simultaneous/recording).

Going to be selling mine soon to upgrade ;) don't let the missus know!

Is that the one with the 65mm front lens, Steve?

Cheers for that reply Steve, it was the 65mm lens jobbie I was looking at. I had seen those comparison vids and know exactly what you mean. I'm so glad you posted this as I can't be arsed to wait for the new pulsar and in all honesty I'd already decided on the Guide. I just can't find the nerve to press BUY

 I'll have one soon, just sorting out a few loose ends first.

On another note, have you tried a screen with yours?
I was looking on some site the other day and what looked like a connecting lead was a ridiculous price. Can you use any type of lead or does it have to be Guide specific and have a 'special' end?

My Guide came with a multi-function lead. One of the terminations is a phono/av male.

Excellent, I didnt fancy buying 'owt else, cheers George

You haven't got any recommendation what screen would suit it have you?
I don't need a DVR, only a screen say 4-5 inches with onboard battery. Or would it be better to run the screen and the Guide off a 12v lithium? If so whats the best way to wire the battery so it has two cigarette type outputs?

Don't run the Guide off a 12V battery or you'll kill it - 9 volts max via the multi function cable that comes with it.
You'll get 2 hours continuous use from the 4 x AA rechargeables it comes with, and additional rechargeable AA batteries are not expensive
I'd recommend a 5" 800x480 screen like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-TFT-LCD-Sta ... 43b550738a
This doesn't have a battery built in but it runs from 12 v so you can connect it to you vehicle battery through the cigarette lighter socket.

Cheers
