sometimes we never get a chance to tell people stuff, or, we figure "they know".

after several months here? This is a great site with a great bunch of guys. It sometimes takes a while for the "long range report" on a site.

most sites have their short comings... this one really doesnt seem to have one.

I liked laserpointer forums, for learning laser assembly? Really, its the place to "be" for that? But... if you want to put an IR on a *gasp* gun? A few of the "old hands" with lots of blinky stars? You get guff, sideways guff mind you, but enough so you know they dont "approve".

If you want to burn matches and plastic to show off you "cool" IR laser for plain fun? Well, THATS just a marvelous pursuit... lasers are for FUN after all !

if i had it all to do over again? I would have "pretended" i was making a "long range flashlight illuminator", not mentioned "gun"... and would have said i wanted uncoated glass lenses, so that i could switch lasers (colors) for the flashlight, lol...

I KNOW a coupel guys there know EXACTLY which lens i need, but, all they do is keep making up excuses how much "better" LEDs are... (its a LASER site, give me a break!)

sometimes... political crap gets i the way of a great site thats otherwise perfect. I know the best site i found for "composing classical music"? I couldnt put my finger on what the problem was... oh, its all european mostly...

a guy i complimented on his compositions, and asked a question about the time signature? While he was polite? his response was:

"Look... 5/4 is just like 6/4 time signature, which you said you worked with before? except warmongers ate the last measure off"

there MIGHT be a site like this one out there, somewhere, with better technical information? (if there is, i havent found it yet, for NV)... but, if you give me a "engineering" choice, between 2 workplaces? ONE with better engineering, and on with better ATTITUDE?

barring anythign else, I'll take superior attitude, over superior ability... almost every time.

plus? there doesnt seem to BE anywhere else getting further at home based NV, really. It still amazes me, that the "grass roots" approach to this is working so well...

you go on some forums? Like my one music site (not the classical one... the other one, lol) its H-U-G-E site... very famous... being all largely liberal musicians? You can say ANYTHING, and i mean ANYthing...

no swear word is off limits, no "graphic, detailed, explanation" is too risque, or of a too delicate subject matter. sex, drugs, rock and roll... running babies over with a steamroller... NOTH-ing is denied you.

i honestly dont see why most sites dont seek to find something "reasonable" and simply see how it goes, and strike the balance.

The larger a site gets, the harder it becomes to moderate and the more rules you end up with. I'm a member of The High Road gun forum, and I guess I am one of the 'blinky star guys' that we don't officially have. 3559 posts in eleven years, with roughly 2500 of them answering questions in one thread.
With 185,434 members and 658,164 threads, the THR management has learned what works and what doesn't on a forum designed to espouse firearms ownership and the right to keep and bear arms. No politics other than directly gun related. No religion. No discussion of abortion. No race. No personal attacks. No forum wars. No... Basically we try to take the high road and and act as a sane source of information for new shooters, regardless of their background. This does buzz kill off topic discussions, but we've never had a member proudly post a video of shooting an armed robber set to heavy metal music. This did occur on another forum.

The other way a large forum can go is it becomes a club built around certain personalities or businesses, where dissenting voices, or anyone who annoys a member of the ruling clique becomes subject to personal attacks. ARF night vision forums is fairly obvious in that regard, as is M4Carbine.net regarding training. Glocktalk went down the same road ten years ago and I understand came close to closure due to litigation as a result of some members using it as a platform to mount attacks on people they didn't like.

Then there is the 'no rules, no moderation' style of forum, such as 4chan, which became famous for child porn and mass shooters posting their plans before committing their crime. It's now moderated by the FBI.

If Nightvisionforumuk.com ever gets as busy as the airgun bbs, then moderation will probably become stricter and rules more codified. Its the way of the world. For the moment its a small group with a common interest,a decent sense of humor and is basically self moderating. We understand its George's front porch and he lets us sit on it to chat, so we don't abuse the privilege. Forums are private property and rights to free speech do not apply. It behooves us to act like guests in another's home.
That being said, I'm really enjoying my stay here, I feel like an old dog that is finally learning some new tricks after several years of stagnation / girth increase and I drop in every day.

I saw this ONE unit, billed as night vision day and night... yeah, it had some cool features, but... really? it said it was 75 yards "recognition range" and 3/4 MO reticle adjustments at 100 yards, lmFao...

let me get this straight... you SERIOUSLY expect me to PAY, like, 1400 american dollars RETAIL... for something that has a "recognition range" of 75 yards??? and i have to move the "reticle" three-fouths of an MOA, and you have the nerve to call that "adjustment"??

and what is "recognition range" anyways? that doesnt sound like "at 75 yards, you can see clearly, and shoot well at that distance"

i dont UNDERSTAND why Tasco, or Barska? doesnt put an oslon black illuminator, and a cam and little screen on a scope... put a little plastic case around it all, so you just bolt it on and GO...

and they could charge your 300 - 400 dollars for a 300 yard night vision scope, complete, illuminator included! (at the prices they could GET the parts for, they would make profit and CLEAN HOUSE grabbing market share!)

and every arsehole would own a night scope... lol...

Recognition range usually means recognition of a man sized target. So 75 yards is pretty damned poor, gen 1 capability. As for Tasco & Barska? my guess is they still think they are optics companies, as in glass lenses.
60 years ago the rail companies in the USA had a lock on distribution hubs. But they thought they were companies that drove trains down tracks, not companies that shifted and distributed bulk freight. They died as the interstate highways opened up, when in fact they had the political clout to arrange routes so they could have dominated the bulk freight by truck market.
Newspapers thought of themselves as selling news stories, when in fact what they sold was classified adverts. With the advent of the internet they could have set up sites dealing with classified adds. etc jobs.com, carsales.com realestate.com etc, dumping the 'news' side of the business. Instead they continued with their old models and failed.
Yukon, seem to get that their business is optics, as in helping people to see, not in selling a particular type of lense, tube or sensor. We'll see if they succeed. My guess is they have the right mind set to still be business in ten years.
