Hi lads, just thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Elliott, I live near Lancaster, Lancashire and shoot air rifles and my .17 HMR. I've been shooting for many years but I'm relatively new to lamping, having only really played with my my mates cree torch. Since getting permission on a golf course for the HMR and with the nights starting to draw in I'm on the lookout for a good lamp to mount to my scope.

Initially I was told the NightMaster 800 would be the one to go for but have since read that the 'Markylight' is better quality and more affordable. I am on a budget so this was music to my ears as the Nightmaster would have taken some saving up for. I'm after something that can throw a tight beam as far as the NightMaster and one that I'll be able to change from a red to white pill

I'll be using the HMR for lamping rabbits and foxes (it's conditioned for fox). Look forward to soaking up some more info before making a decision to purchase. I believe 'Marky' is a regular on here so hopefully I'll bump into him

Hi Elliot. Welcome mate. I think that's the first time I have seen a guy just using a straight name. Good for you.

I like shooting on golf courses with the air rifle and HMR too. I generally use the car headlights as the first option on new or first time in the year shooting till they get wise, then red, then scopeless NV such as the Photon which is extremely covert because it only occasionally needs such a tiny amount of IR at air rifle and HMR ranges:

As far as I know, your only other option for a swap module torch that can be readily swapped on a cold dark golf course without using tools or another light source is the 501b torch - or variants of it. It's so darned versatile and convenient that there are dozens of varieties or rip-offs of it. It doesn't throw as far as the NM, nor do you need it to with the HMR being the furtherest range you will be shooting at.

It's all walking on the golf course, so no option for driving on unfortunately. I'd be using the until to spot for rabbits too, so I'd want something that reached out to around 300 yards so that I can then close the distance before taking the shot at anything up to 150 yards.

How far out does the 501b torch reach? Looks like you've made some improvements to the unit

The copper ones have a better than usual heatsink action that allows me to overdrive them a tad. They are good for a 200ish yard shot/300 yard eyeshine spot. We all have a good idea of what the quarry eyeshine is before we advance and possitively I/D it before the shot. The standard brass pill one to the right will just do your 150 yards but the copper one is better.

I only have one copper one left and have switched to ali ones, but some USA guys have started into the copper idea too:

i'd be going for two UF-T20 torchs from manafont. less than 20 quid each. one can stay white and the other converted to red....job done
i'm not sure how far you get eyeshine out to with one of these on white light....but if it aint far enough you can pick one of about a dozen ways to upgrade it, which usually costs less than 20 quid extra

that is a UF-T20 upgraded to a 78mm aspheric.....i'm sure it cost under 20 quid to upgrade, night master? pffftt!

Thanks sundog. Still getting my head around all the technical terms

I've seen plenty of videos of the NM800 and that's the kind of spec I'd be looking for.

- Scope mountable
- Pressure switch
- Tight beam, with no spill out to 300yds
- Interchangeable pills from red to white

If there is something out there that can replicate, if not beat, it's performance at a much cheaper price I'll be going for it. Being relatively new to all the technical stuff I might ask Marky if he can knock something together for me. I'd like the scope mount and pressure switch included if possible..

I like the idea of using a smaller, hand held torch for the spotting too. Something that I could pop in my pocket and use in conjunction with the scope mounted lamp
