Hi from Kent

Post by Grandadfatboy » 18 Jun 2014, 14:53

Hello everyone, I'm Ian and I live in Walderslade in Kent. I'm 57 and I returned to shooting about 18 months ago, after an absence of 40 years. Until now I have been shooting paper and knock downs, both at the range and in the back garden. My shooting buddy, who has a permission, has kindly offered to teach me the art of field craft on that permission. He uses a torch, mounted to his scope, for night time shooting. I however, am interested in a NV set-up for my rifle, but preferably one I can use in the day too.

I have checked out the NS50/NS200 ranges, but have noticed the awkward shooting stance required with units that attach to ones own scopes ocular lens. A shooter at the range recently allowed me to shoot his Pulsar digital NV something or othered HW100. Very nice piece of kit, but at a whooping £1000+ it ought to be. I'd much prefer a dedicated night scope or to make one of my own, hence my joining this forum. I have an old mini DV camcorder, with night vision, knocking around here somewhere and was hoping to make use of it in my set up, or parts of it anyway. I have plenty of research to do of the many threads on the forum, before I start asking newbie questions.

I look forward to joining in and I'll try not to ask the questions that have already answered. All the best.

Hi and wellcome aboard grandadfatboy.
Keep the camcorder away for now, if thinking of using it as a add on, you would have the same problem with the position on ns50/200.
Dedicated or scopeless is the way to go, have good read on diy section, a lot of scopeless builds are there allready, some on small budget too.

Thank you for the warm welcome guys.

Torchwood, may I ask if the set up in your photos can be used during the day as well as at night? If so that would be an ideal set up for me, or something along those lines. I would be looking to put NV on my S510, but I also love to shoot it at the range too, although I must admit to having a preference for plinking with my new HW95, as I've only had it 2 weeks  and you all know what it's like with new boys toys! :D

Sadly I haven't managed to do much research on the forum as yet, as we are getting ready to celebrate 5 family birthdays this month, with a huge family BBQ this weekend. :D  I did stay up a bit late the other evening, but was so tired that I wasn't absorbing the information I was reading. Just as well I was awake enough to book mark those threads.

All the best.

I did indeed, thanks reaper. :D There's a lot of good stuff on this forum and it's going to take me a while to decipher and study it. I'm already making a list of questions I'd like to ask, but I want to see if they have been asked and answered, before asking them again.

I'm gonna be here a while, me thinks.

Welcome
Nice bunch ere.

I use Picatinny / weaver rails on all my rifles it enables me to swap dedicated/scopeless rigs for the day scopes.

All travel better off the rifles + you can squeeze more in the cabinet.

Just don't tell the Mrs!

You can use it Day and night, I tried a photon last weekend, my scopeless was far superior, in day time you get some colours,(if you set the cam option on auto rather than b/w) using the scopeless all the time now, building some others for the my other riffles too.
Ranges all depends on the lens preference, I happily use 135mm for plinking, but for hunting ( I need more fov) I prefer 75mm or 100mm.
To those guys that want to try scopeless, if you build it, you will never touch the addon again.
