oslon black doesn't have to be IR. they do many colors on the oslon black like ir, red green blue and so on...

(I'll have a stab at this, there are more qualified to answer but here goes)

It's not a silly question, they do other colours in the Oslon range but also do (in a way) in the IR LED's.

BUT

The choice of Infrared LED's vary because the wavelength of their light output is measured in what's called nanometres (nm), it's a unit of measurement of the wavelength of light emitted eg 830nm or 950nm.

We use the LED's in wavelengths available to us that suit our camera's sensitivity best, in general this is around the 800nm to 850nm mark.

BUT

Camera's such as the Watec are most sensitive (correct me if I'm wrong) in the 400-600nm range. The problem with this is that light in this range is 'visible' to the naked eye and is counter productive for our use.
So we go for the best 'happy medium' of light efficiency and invisibility eg 800-850nm.

What this gives us is relative invisibility to the QUARRY with the highest and most efficient visible light to the CAMERA. It's a pay off in a way.

When you hear the lads going on about 940nm IR LED's they are looking to reduce the red glow the LED shows to the quarry - the glow is much less visible behind the torch lens and gives them a more 'covert' light source.
850nm LED's glow in the dark more than 940nm ones do but the 940nm wavelengths are not so visible to the camera and therefore don't produce as bright a light source in the right nm range for the camera to pick up and display.

Does that help ?

H. I understood your explanation. Well explained.

The problem I have is people wanting to go to a 940nm to reduce the red glow of the 850nm led. Is the Red glow a confirmed issue with the illuminators. I would really like to know if it is. I have seen numerous videos on Youtube of Rabbits being shot one after another, They kept feeding after the shot till they were all in the bag. I thing the Red glow is not an issue. Only my opinion , which counts for nothing.

To be honest after reflowing 850nm leds and testing them, I see a nice bright red glow. I tested the 940nm that I had just reflowed and thought I had cooked the lot of them. I had to send an emergency panic email to Bruce. I ended up having to look through my stereo microscope, to see the the faintest glow from the 940nm

I can remember watching a good video from Marky showing the different nm leds in use. I was quite surprised at how well the 940nm illuminated. I was somehow expecting it to be a lot less bright. Then there was the mystery led that turned out ( I think ) to be a 640nm led that is best suited to the Watec camera wavelength.

I think in an ideal world. People just getting into the Nv that we on the forum are making and using, will see the videos showing illumination that is really good out to long distances. Unless they are using a Watec camera, surely these results are going to be hard to replicate with any other camera set up. I have not seen any footage of illuminators tested with Sony Effio cameras. Is there any that I have not seen, or have seen and did not know it.

Ian,
Never really had a problem myself with an 850nm spooking quarry. Can't answer for anybody else's experience, nor would I want to. In my experience there have definitely been times where it has been noticed but not spooked 'em. They are more likely to see you move, hear or smell you first, get those bits right and you're most of the way there.

The way I see it is that a single small red dot, maybe 80 yards or whatever away, is not top of their list of things to be frightened of ! If that red dot and what's behind it starts frantically moving around accompanied by sound and/or smell this combination is more likely to spook them, not the glow alone.

I think that a 940nm Oslon behind a 66mm lens a would work just fine for most applications at short to medium distance and with a 'decent' camera, as you point out though - maybe not all camera's are made equal !

I suppose it's as individual and varied as you could possibly make it in this game, so many variations and so many different ways to do things to get the same end result.

Ian, if you want to see a 940nm led working, look at it with the camera on your mobile phone

vakeiros, I would suggest that you start a new sales thread with the updated items on. This one's getting a bit confusing.

i always edit the first post with the items i have, so the first post it's always updated, now some guys started to talk about the different wavelenghts here XD, i woul require that some moderator would clean the thread and leave only the first post (that it's updated...)

The questions and answers that the members have posted on your thread are valid and relate to the items you are selling.

As I've said, I think it best that you copy and paste your first post into a new thread. Saves people scrolling through all of the posts.
