Once the meter shows up that little increase, then plug it in to check. The process shouldn't take that long but you won't be blowing your new viewfinder. Me thinks.

I wouldn't keep the viewfinder attached while turning the pot, to find out the right voltage. You don't know how much turning of the pot increases what percentage. I assume that you need it to be turned full revolutions for little increments of voltage but it's only a guess. ...or it could be faulty...
