Photon Lens caps with 'iris' @ £24

Post by some bloke » 02 Dec 2013, 18:18

Having found that the standard 5x42 Photon delivers a vastly improved focal range with a light reducing 'iris' hole in front of the objective, I am making them available for sale at £24 each + £6 RMSD - or a cheaper postal option if the buyer takes the non delivery risk.

They will be offered with various diameter 'iris' holes so as to not restrict too much light, relative to the illumination amount that is being used.

People using moderate IR levels, or shooting at outer rimfire ranges will probably find a 25/26mm ish diameter fixed 'iris' is an ideal size to allow sufficient light passage to the sensor.

Anyone using more a more powerful illuminator than needed - who perhaps don't have light shy quarry, or uses the Photon at very close range might benefit from a smaller diameter 'iris'

Sizes are yet to be finalised with trials and I reserve the right revise sizes as I see fit. It will be a good idea if you state the range you are shooting at - and what IR you are using when ordering.

These require a much more decisive action to remove them than the supplied daytime iris lens cap which can easily get knocked off - the fit is very good:

There is a recess in the front of the cap to allow anyone to glue an IR pass filter to the cap if they wish, the filter size needed is 52mm, remove the glass from the threaded carrier and glue it into the recess. I used super glue for these but black silicone rubber is probably better.

For those who have not seen the difference this can make, take a look at this video;

The bulk of the focal improvement was a result of using a reduced light intake via the 'iris' hole. Fitting the filter gives the image quality a slight boost at night, I have not yet tried that in daylight, but the standard lens cap with an even smaller iris and neutral density filter is supplied for that purpose.

I recycle packaging.

Whilst my 501b sales have usually been done via Private messaging, details of this item cannot be viably shown or addressed with my signature picture, so for the first time - I'll be using this section for the lens cap sales. Please make any enquiries on this thread rather than Private Message because I have to frequently delete them and lose track of who has what.

i take it this is for the standard photon and not with a doubler fitted.

Hi Dave,

Good work Dave, now you just need a smaller hole and a brighter IR

Yep. Remember I'm still experimenting with 'iris' sizes so they may get smaller with better results yet.

I just noticed your edit Alan:

More light would be OK if your quarry is not light shy and you perhaps previously bought an illuminator that has more output than you need for a standard 5x42 Photon, I believe you are using a doubler on yours and use it at outer HMR and C/F ranges.

Many will be using their Photon at air rifle or subsonic 22lr ranges where less light and more stealth is required - often for quarry that is red/IR light aware.

Forgot to bump this but reminded by someone messaging me about them. These are up and running now, it would be in the users interest to tell me what range it will be used at - and with what IR if you don't mind.

At close ranges or if using lots of IR I can supply one with a hole at about 20mm~21mm diameter.

Use of moderate IR levels or longer ranges are less of an issue - with less chance of getting excessive light into the sensor so I can supply with a larger hole.

If you don't tell me you will get whatever I have most of, and try to guess what range you use it at. :P

I will also soon be making options with an IR filter friction fitted into the front of it, prices will be £20 more for that option because of the secondary lathe operation and the cost of the filter.

Whilst my 501b sales are usually done via Private messaging, details of this item cannot be viably shown or addressed with my signature picture, so for the first time - I'll be using this section for the lens cap sales.

Thanks for the precise usage details there Olvin:

Yours will be a smaller iris than usual for that IR power at very close range.

Payment received thanks.
