Any keen gardeners on here who know about pruning an overgrown Clematis?

Don't go there Adam.
4X4 catapults have been banned

This thing has just nothing but stems for the first 5ft, then it looks like half an umbrella.
I want to cut it right down and let it start afresh but don't know if it'll recover.
Do we not have an Allan Titsmash on here ????

Thanks for that, it does seem to clarify some of the other articles I've read, to the point of stewing my head to be honest.
Having made assumptions about what type it is having just moved here and not knowing for sure, I have decided to give it a good cutting back and if it doesn't like it, tough.

Chopped one we have right back to the bare trunk(about 4" thick) at the end of last summer with the hope it would die. It looked dead all winter and then sprung to life again in spring, the f4cking thing has spread about 3 metres again. The wife wants to keep it but I hate the thing, going to put some roundup on it next time and tell her it must be diseased.
