Music is one of the most subjective things in the world. Its probably easier to change someones religion than taste in music :D

Couple of things i will say though mate
Just because something doesnt sound good to your ear doesnt mean that its not "in tune and played to perfection" as far as the artist playing it intended it to be, dont confuse not being to your liking for lack of musical talent or ability (maybe if some old bloke with leather patches on the sleeves of his cardy told you it was good you'd like it?)
For example. I cant stand thrash metal, i'd pay good money to turn the shite off.......but that speed guitar they do is harder than a chinese maths exam, cant take that away from em

And playing an instrument, singing a song, and running all over a stage, while keeping 10,000 people in rapture is no easy task
bit harder imo than sitting on a chair with sheet music in front of you and a conductor holding your hand and multiple other instruments to cover up any mistakes

Ah, but that "music" you listen to covers any mistakes, it's just a racket

You may find that your taste alters as you get older  As a yoof, well up until 30's, I loved the likes of Deep purple, Black Sabbath, cream etc, then started to like instrumental more. Liked ELO, Jean Michel Jarre etc and that led to the classical music. You just alter as you get older, sometimes

Perhaps it's just too much for my old ears then, because all I can hear is bang, bang, crash, crash and someone shouting down a mike

I have to admit, DP and BS don't sound the same now as when I was younger. I THINK I could actually hear music in it years ago, it sort of flowed, now it doesn't even seem joined up let alone flow

Anyone else in their sixties found this ?

Guitar bands have been doing what guitar bands do since the 50's geoff, you just gotta know its there

Off the top of my head this song from a british band a few years ago could easily pass for 60's era

Bonus fact
Iggy pop has been performing almost constantly since his high school band "the iguanas" in 1960............greatest living rock star (fact)

Fair comment Adam I'm not saying any of the bands you put links up to can't play there guitars etc, but they just don't play the sort of music I like to listen to.
To be honest i think it's an age thing some of the music my kids like makes my ears sore, but there again some of it I quite like.
I must say I think in the 80s through to the 90s there was some brilliant music released, but hey ho we all got different tastes "thank goodness"

" My bonus fact " i met Mick jaguar from the stones many years ago, he was going with a girl who worked for my dad.

Nah, thats not why i posted mate. I was just saying that "classic" guitar bands are not decade specific. Like rodder's classical stuff its always around if you look

Couple of thoughts. Hearing damage may be part of the issue. I've lost the ability to hear some ranges in one ear. If I put an ear bud in, in my left I hear the complete song, in the right there are bits missing. *Cue Dire Straits singing Industrial Disease*.
Then there is the factor of emotional involvement. I saw Eric Clapton live. The music was tone perfect. He didn't give a damn. He was just going through the motions, perfectly. It was not an enjoyable experience.
Roger Waters playing The Wall or Dark Side? He puts the emotion into the songs, from Mother to Welcome to the Machine. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun was absolutely stunning.
Classic music can sweep you into the sound and create an emotional response, it just takes longer. One day I'll tell the tale of being pulled over at 3am, blood shot eyes, reeking of gun smoke, the car empty except for guns, chrome plated pistol mags, boxes of ammo, with Oh Fortuna blasting through the speakers as I pulled into the lay-by at 100km/h to inform the cops that I came from Canberra and was going to Canberra. :)
For years I listened to a CD of classical pipe organ music when stuck in heavy traffic. Great for preventing road rage. It was a gift from a gay client who put all his creativity into music. 40 odd years of training and research. The other CD he gave me was the music for his brothers wedding to his boyfriend. That squicked me out and was never unwrapped. :P
