Still not 100% sure what way to go

85mm F1.4 Rokinon Canon EOS with C Mount adaptor
105mm F2.8 Super Takumar or Takumar M42

Dave if one wants to experiment with lenses of different types, e.g M42 & C/CS on the same spotter what would be the recommendation for the mount fitted to the spotter body?

The focal length will not be close enough for CS lenses, but you can screw a C mount to M42 lens adaptor into it at a usable focal length. If doing the latter and you dont yet have the M42 adaptor use one of these that can be faced back in the very unlikely event you can't get infinty:
