Re: I'm sorry it's come to this but................
When I first seen the price of Mark's lights for sale to members on the Forum. I have to say I had to think to myself is it worth standing at the Lathe to make one of these housings myself when I can buy the whole thing ready assembled with all the internals and aspheric lens. I only have to supply my own Maglite D cell head.
All I can say is if I were making these to sell it would not be at that price.
Lets break this down. I am sure we all know the price of the components that goes into making the Markylight. The parts list is on the site for people that want to make their own build. I am sure it is just under £30 for all the components. Then you have the aluminium to buy. The machining of the aluminium believe it or not can take as much as 3-4 hours per housing. Then there is cutting fluids for threading to give a nice clean thread. I have no clue as to how much Mark puts in time wise to do the wiring side of things. Lets say an hour. Only Mark knows the answer to that.
So each unit takes about 4-5 hours to complete (my guesstimate) could be longer.
I can tell you right now. He is not booking any holidays on the strength of profits made from sales.
I am also guessing that it will probably not cover the money he spends on items to test and freely give the forum members the results at his cost.
Just so as not to seem like a Marky number one fan. I read the post that sparked this all off and I think there were fair comments made regarding sensor sizes. I think the profiteering comment was maybe the push too far at a time when Mark was having a bad day at work. In saying that. We all have a right to voice our opinions and not be in fear of saying something that could upset someone. I hate walking on egg shells. Each of us has the right to ignore or not react to any comments that we do not like.
I look forward to reading all posts from all members, seeing how other people do their thing with ir. If it works for them and they are happy with it. Power to them.
Some of us can not afford to run out and buy the latest cameras or what ever the in thing is at the time. I include myself in this bracket. We have no choice but to use what we have and can afford.
I am a complete novice at all this electronic wizardry that goes into these creations. The longer I am here reading posts and taking bits of info from not just Mark, the quicker my learning curve will be.
I thank all that take their time to share with others. I also thank the forum and people that keep it up and running. Without their work we do not have a place where we can all come together and learn from each other.
Cheers

dave apologised for his comment (and more besides) on his own thread. so let's move on eh?
as for the 1/3 vs 1/2 thing....mark, dave. yer both as bad as each other. and need your bloody heads banging together
this is sposed to be an enjoyable hobby not keyboards at dawn (we've got the bbs for that lol)
if some-one asks for lens advice just give your opinion like everyone else does and let the guy asking the question decide for himself
the odd's are he'll probably try both anyway....i know i have and i'v still not made me mind up

Leave him alone boys, he knows we appreciate his efforts and for scant reward at that.
Recharge those batteries mate, take your time.

I think things have been derailed slightly by the "Profiteering" remark, Has the original issue that's been the cause of friction for some weeks been addressed ?
Dave raises some very valid points in his posts and I don't think it right to hold him totally responsible for what's happened as seems to be the view of some.
I applaud Dave for having the courage to speak out and attempt to ensure that more than one viewpoint is acceptable, although as he's admitted he didn't quite get it right, I know that others think a lot but say nowt, or at least think they'd better not say owt for peace and quiets sake.
