Re: Thermal..... Again!
You'll notice that when it is dry there is much more detail in view, as the rain tends to take pretty much everything inanimate to the same temperature band. Have fun with it!

Much better than last night, it must have been the heat from the house messing with it when I was trying to scan at distance.
Is it ok to leave it switched on with the lens cap on?
My intention is to spot then slip it in a bino pack with the lens cap on to shoot but wondered if it would calibrate itself to death. Didn't think it would really harm it but to use a 4 minute or so stand by seemed stupid when I was using my left eye to spot as it would keep knocking itself off.
No problem with leaving it switched on with the lens cap on. It'll probably only calibrate irself once when you put it in the bino pack and again when you take it out and start to use it again.
Re viewing video you've recorded with it - I strongly suggest you remove the SD card and download the video from the card into you computer for viewing.
I connected my Guide to my computer via the USB connector and the computer detected the Guide as an additional hard drive and I was able to download and view the video. The problem came the next time I tried to use the Guide - the screen was just grey - no temperature changes showing, Fortunately mine was only a couple of weeks old when this happened and the seller picked it up and had it repaired and returned to me within a week.
Since then, I've always removed the SD card rather than connect the guide to the computer.
Cheers

Re: Thermal..... Again!
I see what you mean SV, I popped outside last night and what a difference. It was dry and everything was clear as a bell. It was picking up the sheep heat sources further away than during the day and with much more clarity and definition. I spouted out my first impressions a little prematurely but I was only comparing them to my only other experience of Gloops 518 which seemed streets ahead picture/detection wise when I tried it a while back. The clarity of my guide in the house was extremely impressive but I think using it inside the house looking out on a hammering down evening was rather detrimental to the image produced. I'm just hoping this rain clears so I can get out tonight.
Bruce, thank you for that. I knew I'd read it somewhere about the card and I'll do as you say and remove it. That's also reassuring to know I can just slap it in the bino pack switched on without doing damage as unless I'm static foxing it will spend a fair bit of time in there.

Cheers Fizz, they can't be too much longer, your will power is stronger than mine!
Its hammering down here, I'm busting to get out but I don't want to get it wet
I can't see me staying in all night though as I haven't even put it through its paces properly yet
I just tried my tripod with the guide mounted but it doesn't fit in my hide, its about six inches too high on the tripods lowest setting so there won't be any footage of anything being shot as I was hoping for. I'd like to get some footage somehow if possible though, its all going to depend on Charlie turning up an how it reacts if it does. I checked my trail cam this morn which has been out the last two nights ready for my outing tonight but on inspection I hadn't switched the bleddy thing on, what a waste of two nights

Re: Thermal..... Again!
Well, I'm in my tent, got me flask, thermal, Nv spotter and rifle. The thermal was picking out the sheep lovely on the way here but now I'm in my hide its so hot compared to outside the thermal is a washout land wise, gutted to say the least. If it wasn't raining I could have the front down but because it is I'm all zipped up with just a spy hole open for the gun and gizmo's. I'm regrettably switching over to Nv. Not only because of the washed out pic but the bleddy eye piece is like a frigging torch. A shuttered eye cup is an absolute must if you want to use a thermal covertly. This isn't going to be the night I was hoping for...

Luxury at it's finest.... a tent in the middle of nowhere with wi-fi!
camo304 might be a source for shuttered eyecups.

Not wi fi but I've got Internet connection on my phone. The only real luxury was lying on my gun bag
Well, I'm back, no fox footage but a very eventful night. I've learnt it wasn't the heat in the tent at all. When its piddling down thermal imagers 'image' isn't very detailed and defined at all unless something hot is there. The detection distance also 'seemed' reduced but I've yet to prove this by going out when its dry. In one direction the image was all washed out and my eyes were killing, almost total black out from looking through it for so long and 'straining' to try and pick out fence lines or actually establish where I was looking. If I rose it towards the sky it was clear as a bell and in some directions it seemed much better. What I learnt was the sooner I get the screen the better for static watching, switching to Nv was a lovely relief on my eye and I don't like looking through the thermal for hours on end. The other thing was just leave the thing on auto and don't bother touching anything.
On another note can someone tell me what does the frame rate actually do and what is the factory setting?
Re: Thermal..... Again!
The frame rate is the number of times per second the image on the screen gets refreshed.
The faster the frame rate the smoother the movement of moving objects will appear (or stationary objects moving across the screen when you scan the thermal around)
25 frames per second is usually regarded as the minimum for your eye and brain to think that movement is continuous.
The Guide refreshes at 50 frames/sec so it has no problem with movement.
I don't think it's possible to change the frame rate and I suggest you simply leave the Guide in Auto and let it sort out the best settings for any specific situation
Most of the FLIR thermal are limited to 9 frames/sec which is OK if everything in the field of view is static, but any movements within the field of view definitely appear very jerky.
Cheers
