The eye strain closing one eye for long periods of time whilst scanning and then swapping to the other to shoot caused 'me' a problem. I used the same eye tonight and no problem focussing on the dedicated reticle after looking through the thermal for periods time, the only difference was the Nv scope seemed slightly darker but the reticle was perfectly visable. :D
Of course I'm the opposite. Shoot left eye, scan right eye. One of the things Foxhunter and myself are going to have a go at over the weekend weather permitting is to try it with the amber flip up lids I am flogging to see if it reduces eye blindness and see if I can flog a few more as I want to get them shifted out of the house.

I have actually put one on my archer as well and it works surprisingly well.

the big difference was the price that's why I am ordering the pulsar
Guide is £5000 but the pulsar is under £3000

The BIG difference is I've got a guide in my hands, I don't believe the pulsar is out yet. I was all for the pulsar but just couldn't be arsed to wait although they shouldn't be long now. There's a lot going for the new pulsar, the old pulsar was certainly up to the job so I'd expect them to sell a lot of the new units. The Guide can be had for about a grand cheaper than you suggest, you just need to look in the right place. They both share the same sensor but I believe the guide has a slightly better screen although I doubt very much you'd notice. The guide also has a slightly larger lens so has a slightly further detection range. I'm happy with the guide and I'm sure you'll be happy with the pulsar, keep us posted on how it performs

On another note, that screen works brilliantly with the thermal. Ideal scenario is to connect it to a remote swivel base because your arm doesn't half ache after pointing it around for a couple of hours. Its definitely the way to go if you're static shooting. I think those caps would also help reduce the light coming out of the eye piece, its certainly noticeable inside a vehicle. No blindness whatsoever just looking at that tv screen for a couple of hours though so I'm very happy.

I was also told that the pulsar has a manual calibration setting but the guide is only automatic and can shut down just at the wrong moment.
is this true?

You're correct.
The Guide automatically calibrates itself pretty much when it feels like it. The calibration process freezes the screen for about 2 seconds and then it returns to normal operation.
Calibrating the Pulsar involves fitting the lens cover and pushing a button and then removing the lens cover again.
In practice I don't think either method would cause you to miss anything.

Does the Guide still calibrate itself in semi and manual mode? I haven't used it in those settings long enough to notice

I agree about the calibrating not causing any problem whatsoever. The only time would be if a fox was walking over your toes and it spooked it  Has anybody had a fox spook from calibrating? It's a distinctive noise right up by the unit but how far away would a fox hear it?

In reality, it's a low shutter click and I've known foxes be as near as 60 yards and not be disturbed by it.

The unit doesn't 'shut down' as has been said. In two years I've never once been peeved or felt I've missed an opportunity by the unit calibrating itself.

I'm bored so thought I'd upload a (short, I'm not that bored) rabbit vid with the thermal. The rabbit is on a bank ungrazed this year so there's a fair length of rough mountain grass. They can't hide behind it from me anymore :shh:

Surely not? I just clicked on the link and it worked for me

I've just tried altering the video settings, it should work now (I hope). Not exactly good anyway but just thought it was interesting to show how roger thinks he's somewhat hidden.Idiot
This youtube stuff is all alien to me but don't kmow how else to upload vids as they never seem to upload to photobucket.
