New to night vision....
New to night vision....
Hi all,
What a fantastic, knowledgable forum.
After not a very good nights shooting (on rats) I decided to turn to tinternet to see what I was doing wrong. One thing led to another and I found myself registered on here!
I have spent the last couple of days reading through a load of threads and I now NEED a nv setup!
I think I will go down the e700 DIY route - tried to order one today but sure24 didnt answer the phone, guess they are back to work after the new year.
As a complete novice who is struggling to get to grips with the workings of nv I am unsure of is why is there need to remove the ir lens from the camera (aren't these CCTV nv cameras?)
Also what illuminator would best suit me if I wanted to swap from my air rifle (close up rats etc) to my hmr for rabbiting.
Cheers, Rob

Re: New to night vision....
firstly hi and welcome to the forum Rob, your in the right place for diy builds too. if you look at some of Rolands youtube vid's about the ej230 all will come clear about the little red filter. the ej230 and the e700 are same camera
you might be asked to narrow your location down a bit, plus it helps sometimes when other members are close they can and do help each other out
enjoy the forum mate

Re: New to night vision....
welcome aboard Rob
the camera's are used for both day and night with cctv, hence why the IR filter is fitted to them, however as you have guessed, we are only usually interested in using them at night........thats why we remove the filter,.......to allow as much IR through as poss
as regards the illuminator, you should check out Dave's (somebloke) and marky's (marky610) threads, as they both make torches suitable for what you need
or check out the diy illuminators section for a home build of your own
cheers jock

Hi rob, You found the right place for some good info mate, there are threads galore to read up on.
As said already, you wont need a big bad IR for those ranges and that camera

Do you have a link to rolands vids?
Re: New to night vision....
Thanks for the welcome lads.
I'll go and do a bit more research on the lights. I have seen some of the Roland's vids already - I think that is how I found my way here as he refers to the lads in the uk doing similar stuff. Didn't pay enough attention to the illuminator stuff though... Need to go back and watch again.
Thanks Jock I now get it with the ir Filter removal. Just out of curiosity if you don't remove it does that limit the range or the brightness or both? Could you just use a brighter light?
I have read some of the DIY illuminator threads and with my current level of understanding, i cannot follow them. Think I am missing some of the basics as they might as well be written in French!
Cheers, Rob
