Hello from Here
Hello from Here
Thats the east of England, Cambridgeshire. New to this forum, regular on a shooting forum. I am hoping to learn more about NV reading your threads. I have used NV a fair bit over the last 30 years, and goodness has it changed?
One thing I have found is too many discount Gen 1, while I think it has its place. Not just affordable, but given the rough treatment many units get who wants to pay for Gen 2/3 only to break or loose the unit? Also, Gen 1 performance while far short of 2/3 will often do the job.
Having said that, if I could afford a Gen 3, of course I would have one now!
One thing that already gives me headaches is the advantages or otherwise of digital. Anyone?

It's more a DIY type product with greater flexibilty than tubed NV.
It's cheaper to get good performance with digi than tubed, but generally you need to use huge amounts of IR.
It can't be damaged by excessive amounts of light the same as tubed can.
It's not to everyone's taste, I personally have trouble with the digi image, eye strain and headaches.
As yet there are only a few units that get anywhere near good tubed NV performance.
Oh ! Welcome to the forum from one of the few who prefer tubed NV, the best.
Head down awaiting incoming.
Effluent in many languages.

Re: Hello from Here
Thanks for the helpful start Chas and PESCA, I see from your post count you know of which you speak....
Eyestrain and headaches? I suspect you observe for longer periods than I need to. Non the less, something to look out for. Normally for long period observation (NV or daytime) one would take turns with others to avoid strain, and keep sharp. Not a luxury many hunters or wildlife observers have I imagine.
Recently a Yukon Ranger passed through my hands. It gave a fair image, but seemed over complicated and used 6 batteries!! Heavy on the pocket....
I must say the idea digital cant be damaged by other bright lights is attractive.

welcome to the forum Tranter
if your using a vehicle to shoot from, and your using a digi spotter, then its possible to have a larger screen in the motor.......a lot easier on the eyes
cheers jock

Re: Hello from Here
Hi Tranter over there.
My brief and meagre Gen1 experience is that it's mostly very low mag. As you know Gen2 and gen3 are the big boys toys - but dedicated digitital (I was going to correct that but decided I liked it) is the next nearest thang trying to catch it up - and not doing too bad a job at it most times considering it's much lower cost.
If you fancy a bit of a fiddle and a summer project it will produce VERY usable results.

Re: Hello from Here
Welcome to the forum, I'm a great lover of the tube for spotting & shooting but now absolutely loving the thermal for spotting, it has moved things to a different level, so much so that its almost unfair,
Re: Hello from Here
Rickfitz, I have no worthwhile experience with thermal, but get the 'unfair' comment. Many, many years ago I was at a security exhibition and they had a sensitive thermal camera pointed at a carpet. I walked across the carpet, just once, and my footprints could be seen on the screen. I was impressed.
Some bloke, yes I enjoy a fiddle. Mrs T has tried to stop me, but I carry on anyway. In fact in my old trade, the shooting trade, I had a reputation for being very innovative and inventive. Though they called it bodging.
I will be checking out a digital nv unit over the next few days. Bushnell stealthview 3x. Its not for me to keep, its for someone else, but I will evaluate. Anyone else noticed when you want to check a unit out, it coincides with a full moon! Why is that?
I smurfed the net and found some very bad reviews. Non the less have learnt not to pay much attention to what others say. I didn't get where I am today by listening to others (Broke).

Is that the wolf man in all of us or the equipment looks fantastic in the full moon, personally I like it as black as the ace of spades, hopefully nothing knows you're there until I pull the trigger, I do get the urge to go out hog shooting on the full moon but that's only because thats when most people do it, I guess a dark night would suite me just fine
