Another SB spotter

Post by some bloke » 19 Nov 2014, 16:16

Another E700 spotter with a second user 50mm SLR lens. It runs on two 18650 rechargeable batteries - not supplied.
It has a 5" LCD monitor. This one has a solid handle with a 1/4" 20 TPI camera tripod thread stud to fit the mount.

£290 posted RMSD - or £330 posted with the illuminator and mount.

I'm now making them with a wider adaptor throat - and the neck of the E700 camera neck has been cropped to expose the entire CCD sensor to the full width of the 1" diameter SLR lens for unparalleled low light performance.
Obviously this voids the warranty of the E700 camera - as does the fact that the cabling has been hard wired.

The spotter is custom made to take this 5" monitor...that can be re-located to inside a vehicle with a 1 metre extension cable - available separately

A DVR is shown here fitted to the side with velcro using a 'Y' lead splitter.
If used in the vehicle the DVR and splitter would be better placed on the dashboard.

This is how you access the battery compartment:

I assess this type of rig by how well it sees without artificial illumination.

These videos are a fair appraisal of how you can expect it to perform. The image seen on the small monitor is many times clearer than the compressed and uploaded to youtube video that you see, you will get a slightly better idea if you minimise your page to about half screen to get a smaller player:

The first is approaching the worst ambient light conditions you are likely to find where it will still see something at air rifle range without assistance. If there is even less light you will see nothing at all without an illuminator.

This compares to about the very best you will see from it in patchy cloud and good light conditions, but it was made with a slightly better and longer focal length lens:

This is an advantage it can give you in foggy conditions:

Hi Bud,

I'm new to this forum, i joined to find out more about your spotters.
Can you tell me the range?
How long does the battery last?
Does the £330 include the IR Illuminator?
Can this be modified to mount to a gun and go scopeless?
Thanks
Jamie

Hi Jamie - welcome to the forum.

Hmm , range depends on so many things but this one is way up the list in performance stakes. Take a look at the videos in my last post to see three examples of its performance, note how there is no IR used sometimes.

Decent 10650 batteries will last about three hours constant running but you have seen how easy it is to swap them in the field for another three hours use.

Illuminator and its mount included at £330.

It can do for air/22lr rifles with that 50mm lens which relates to about 3.5 to 4 mag if it were a scope - with maybe an extra high mount or riser block but the single mount fixing to my mind is not really up to as much in the knock department as a twin mount one - here:

Thanks for the reply!

I did have a read through your numerous posts on here last night, so, i'm i little bit more clued up now
How much would it cost for exactly the same 1 you sent down under? did you use a f1.8 lens?

I would like to use it as a spotter first, then maybe go scope-less later.

Thanks

No problem. Could you alter your profile to say so.

Helps us all if we know where each other are based.

Cheers.

This one then? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2kr60e5 ... -OWKFJadkw

I no longer have those early battery and screen modules, and yes, that one was equipped with a 50mm SLR lens and M42 apdaptor.

............................

The current equivelent is this one: http://nightvisionforumuk.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=8645

I now have more 75mm TV lenses in stock and another EJ230 camera on order.
It will be listed in this section about the middle of next week with 35mm 50mm and 75mm lens options.
Prices will range from £330 to £440 depending on the lens taken, without the illuminator. A spotter handle will be £10.
